A fire engine lifts or helps an obese patient almost every day, new figures show, in calls which have cost the authorities £4million over the past five years.
The latest statistics reveal the burden placed on the emergency services as the struggle to deal with increasing numbers of extremely overweight people.
Almost one in four Britons are now classed as officially obese and that number is predicted to rise further in coming decades. Figures released to the Conservatives under the Freedom of Information Act show that fire services were called out almost every day of the last five years to assist in lifting obese patients.
